Ep 176: Samoa Cookie Bars
Monday May 11, 2020
Monday May 11, 2020
Andrea's raving about her latest discovery: using spelt flour in Ina Garten's chicken pot pie. Then it's a review of Samoa Cookie Bars from Life Love and Sugar -- better than the boxed version from the Girl Scouts? This week's bake along is a favorite 1920s dessert, the pineapple upside down cake from King Arthur Flour -- this time, made in a skillet. Finally, the hosts take a deep dive into the food history of the 1920s to discover why innovations in science and technology 100 years ago are still influencing how we bake and eat today.

Ep 174: Donut Loaf
Monday Apr 27, 2020
Monday Apr 27, 2020
It’s a bumper final episode of Sweet & Sour Month! The hosts are intrigued by a sour-cream pie crust, and Stefin’s finally tackled homemade milk kefir using freeze-dried starter (reminding Andrea of cowboy sourdough). In this week's review, the duo dodge numerous frustrations to declare Shauna Sever’s Donut Loaf a huge, powdered-sugar-covered win. And who can resist the month’s final bake-along? Emma Christensen's Buttermilk Quick Bread with an astonishing 10 variations, that uses your choice of fat, flour, and sweet or savory add-ins. Finally, the duo take a Dairy Deep Dive into the history behind some of this month’s tangy ingredients.

Ep 173: Lemon Sour Cream Pie
Monday Apr 20, 2020
Monday Apr 20, 2020
A variety of quarantine baking challenges kick off the show; your favorite baking duo are on the case to help you with freezing dairy and locating egg- and flour-free desserts. The recipe review of Lemon Sour Cream Pie from Tastes Better From Scratch featured one roaring success with a blind bake! Both hosts agreed this pie's star ingredient, sour cream, makes for a lovely and delicious dessert. This week's bake along is Donut Loaf from Midwest Made by Shauna Sever. Stefin's excited based on recipe name alone, while Andrea's hoping it will help her overcome her donut aversion.

Ep 172: Chocolate Chai Kefir Cake
Monday Apr 13, 2020
Monday Apr 13, 2020
Stefin and Andrea were blown away by the recent virtual Preheated Bake Along spearheaded by Listeners Jesse and Rebecca in late March. From cranberry banana bread to “ugly cake,” with stops in Florida for strawberry jalapeño jam, fennel crackers in London, and first-time croissants, our Listeners worldwide had a great time sharing their original bakes. Though this is the first official month devoted to desserts made with tangy dairy, the Preheated hosts have been baking with buttermilk, sour cream, cream cheese and crème fraîche since Episode 1, but have never baked with the milk kefir featured in the Chocolate Chai Kefir Cake from Olive Magazine. Sadly, though both are fans of warming chai spices, as well as chocolate cake, they felt the flavor combo did not work. Hopefully, this week’s bake along, the Lemon Sour Cream Pie from Tastes Better from Scratch will be a creamy, cheerful delight. Finally, in an ongoing feature on how to make some of this month’s featured dairy ingredients in your own kitchen, the duo describe making homemade crème fraîche, buttermilk and sour cream.
